My Steering Wheel Shakes While Braking
If you notice your steering wheel shaking when stopping your vehicle, you may have warped brake rotors. Warped rotors are the most common cause of unexpected vibrations during braking. The shaking sensation occurs as your brake pads squeeze against the uneven surface of the damaged rotor.
Warped brake rotors are a serious problem, as they can impair your ability to stop your car. Make sure you have them inspected as quickly as possible. Your mechanic can take a look at the damage and assess the best course of action.
If the rotors have deep scrapes or groove marks, they will probably have to be replaced. Replacement will also be necessary for rotors that have worn down below the minimum safe thickness. If the damage is less severe, a simple machining will have your rotors functioning just like new.
My Steering Wheel Shakes While Driving
Perhaps you’ve noticed your car steering wheel shakes not just when you step on the brakes, but when you’re driving down the road. There are a couple of possible explanations for what could be happening.
If you notice the shaking when you drive at speeds greater than 20 or 30 miles per hour, it’s possible that your tires have become unbalanced. Bring your car in to your mechanic and ask for a tire rebalance to see if this corrects the problem.
Have you been driving on a lot of rough dirt roads lately? Your vehicle may be out of alignment. This can result in uneven wear on the tires and steering wheel shaking. If you suspect this is the problem, have your mechanic check your alignment.
