What Goes Into a Transmission

You, most likely, have never placed hands on a transmission. If you have, come down and hang out with us at the shop – we love talking grease monkey work…

For everyone else, the odds of you messing with a transmission is slim to none. The closest most people get to transmission work is when things go really bad with theirs. Why “really bad”? You typically don’t know anything has gone wrong wrong until it’s gone terribly wrong.

The transmission in your car has approximately 1,293,425 moving parts (that’s hyperbole) and as one or two of those parts fail to function properly you transmission starts working harder – and you don’t notice a thing.

So, Do You Know If You Need Transmission Service?

There is virtually no way of assessing your transmission over the phone or through email. With so many moving parts, we want to know and see everything before we diagnose any problems.

There are a few things you can pay attention to which will indicate something may be wrong.

One is you feel like you’re driving in a certain gear and your vehicle shifts gears for no apparent reason. Another thing you may noticed is you feel rough shifts, like your transmission is refusing to change gears or doesn’t change gears smoothly.

Delayed engagement, noticing fluid leaks and, most obviously, the check engine light are all indicators something may be wrong

What We Examine In Your Transmission

When we look at a vehicle’s transmission we will examine the following (and admittedly is mechanic speak, but we want you to see that we actually have a list we go through):

  • Switch and solenoid function
  • Engine RPM
  • Throttle Linkage
  • Modulators
  • Transmission Mounts
  • U-Joints
  • Fluid Retention
  • Electronic systems diagnosis
  • Honesty About Your Transmission
