Best Arizona Day Trips for Spring Break

The Phoenix area is regularly ranked among the best places to live, and all of the natural beauty in this area is one of the best reasons from that. Even if you’re just planning a short trip from Gilbert or the surrounding areas, there’s plenty to see and do. Here are four of our favorite day trips if you’re looking for spring break activities this year.

1 – Visit the Grand Canyon

It takes less than four hours to get to Grand Canyon National Park from most of the Phoenix area. The drive itself is spectacular, but that’s nothing compared to the views you’ll experience once you arrive. The Grand Canyon is one of the seven natural wonders of the world, and it will take your breath away no matter how many times you’ve seen it before.

2 – Jerome

If you’re looking for an even shorter drive, this mining town turned ghost town is only about two hours away from the Phoenix area. It’s been updated to accommodate tourists with things like Jerome State Historic Park and the Mine Museum, but it still has enough historic charm to teleport you back in time to the Old West. Jerome is also right near Prescott, where you can stop for lunch, hiking, or even kayaking.

3 – Joshua Tree National Park

The drive to Joshua Tree National Park might only take you a little bit over three hours, but we still recommend getting an early start so you can spend plenty of time there. You can easily spend hours driving and hiking through this park. Consider packing a lunch so you can enjoy a meal while taking in rock formations and the famous Joshua trees.

4 – Saguaro National Park

This is another short drive from Gilbert, but you’re heading south this time. You can reach the park in less than two hours (depending on exactly where in the Phoenix area you start), and the Sonoran Desert scenery will make that short drive worth the while. You can definitely spend an entire day walking and driving through the desert, but many people like to swing through nearby Tucson for lunch and a relaxing break.

Do I Need Car Maintenance Before a Road Trip?

Before you set off on a drive through the desert, it’s definitely best to know that your car can make the journey. A hot day stranded on the side of the road is absolutely not the best way to spend your spring break (or any time, for that matter). Here are a few things you can do to give yourself more peace of mind and enjoy the drive:

  • Check your tire pressure.
  • Take care of any minor car maintenance you’ve been putting off.
  • Check your spare before you leave.
  • Pack water and food, just in case.
  • Bring your vehicle in for preventative maintenance.
